A question about an unknown part
I'm still trying to track down the source of my high idle on my 94 4.9. I was looking around and I found a black box just under the battery that has two "lids" that will come off and has a line that comes from the tb. Well by one of the lids there is a hole & crack in the plastic box. Would this cauuse any vacuum/idle problems? Also I noticed from the air pump to the black container, there is a hose that looks like it has been cut coming off that container. Again, would that be an issue? I'm no mechanic by any means and this is where I do my learning!
Might be the charcoal canister, if the hoses are broken off most likely there is a vacuum leak, spray some flammable carb cleaner around the broken hoses if the idle changes its a vacuum leak.
The canister itself has a tiny hole and is also cracked. Seperately, the hose coming from the check valve at the passenger fender from the smog pump looks like it's been cut as it is just hanging there sucking air. To go along with that it looks like one of the three solenoids in the egr area (the one closest to the firewall) is gone. Would it be fair to assume all of these could be contributing to my high idle?
What you're describing is the Vapor Canister (also known as the Charcoal Canister, and EVAP Canister). It lets your engine burn excess fuel vapor, instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.
As to whether or not it's causing a high idle, I can't really say. Plug the line going to the throttle body, and see if it gets any better.
Either way, it should be replaced. Go to your local 'you pull it' style junk yard, and find one with the same hose configuration. Mine was held in with a single 8mm bolt, and it only cost me $4.50 plus a couple bucks for new hoses from Pep Boys.

Some trucks have 3 of those control solenoids and some only have 2. Since yours is a '94 I'd guess it only has 2. They combined the two controls of the smog pump into one at some point.
