Default push button 4x4 electrical issue

Got an issue the the push button 4x4 on my 92.

I start the truck hit the button, nothing. With the truck is running, if i unplug either the shift motor or transfer case computer and plug it back in, it works fine until the truck is shut down again.

Now, I'm by no means a novice back yard hack. I am just a full-time mechanic who is not looking forward to chasing an electrical issue... especially one as odd as this. I replaced the computer, and bought new shift motor already, so I'm left assuming i have a short somewhere.

Has anyone dealt with a similar issue before? and would anyone know where I could get a detailed wiring diagram? Thanks guys.

Since you are a mechanic I'm assuming you have it in neutral when engaging 4x4.

doesn't the front locking device operate electric over vaccum? could you have a vaccum problem at teh axle versus a electric problem?

Just some thoughts.

these fords don't use a vaccum actuator on the axle, and the push button was originally designed to be "shift on the fly," so it shouldn't matter if it's in nuetral, park or drive, unless you're going into 4lo, but yes I've covered almost all of it. The 4x4 did work and was used when i bought the truck 2 years ago, now it does not.

Thanks for the input though, it's very well possible I'm over looking something simple, so it is appreciated.

I own a 2wd so i may be wrong, but if it's push button, somewhere on the transfer case is an electric actuator, its most likely your problem.
