Default Power Steering Issue/ Filter???

1993 f150 302 v8 e4od tranny 2wd

Just picked this truck up. The power steering works but at a stop after a few movements back and forth of steering, I lose assist. If I am moving or give it gas I get assist back, but if I am turning the wheel it seems I only have enough pressure for a few turns. No leaks/ whining of pump that I can see. I want to change filter first and see if that is issue. WHERE IS THE FILTER??? I look online at the part and it looks long like it fits in a line or something. Anyone know and how can I tell if it is the pump or gear. Thanks.

I have never seen a factory installed filter in the power steering system
I have installed one of these filters in the return line as well as a fluid cooler in my 91.

Sounds like you have a pump problem but I would go ahead and do a fluid flush and see if that takes care of it. Remove the return line from the pump reservoir and drain what you can from the system. Install a vacuum cap over the nipple on the pump reservoir and run the hose into a pan or bucket - may need to splice in an extension hose. Fill reservoir with clean fluid and turn wheels lock to lock this should siphon fluid through the system (Much easier with wheels off the ground) "WITHOUT ENGINE RUNNING" continue to fill reservoir until fairly clean fluid comes of the return line. (Similar to bleeding brakes - don't let reservoir go dry).

Temp install return line start engine and work wheels lock to lock a couple times. May need to repeat whole process once or even twice depending on how dirty it is. Typically I end up using between 4 and 6 quarts during flush and refill.

Thanks Todd. I'll try this first before buying a new pump.
