The Ford PS pump is normally loud but since the cap was off a flush might be a good idea or pull the trigger and do the Saginaw swap. On mine I pulled off the return line and kept adding fluid until the color was the same. Turning the wheel lock to lock will help to flush the steering gear. I used about 3 quarts.

If its the Ford Thompson pump it will whine. My 95 is quieter than my old 94 but the Saginaw pumps found in the E series van are better pumps and much quieter.

Seems to steer easier. Or may be the butt-dyno effect. But I'm happy with the swap, it was easy. Mainly did it because I was bored..

If I do the swap from my stock pump to one of the e series van, will I need different lines or will it be a direct replacement.

Grab the lines that come with the junkyard pump. I used the original cooler line (that loops around under the engine on 4x4 models) and then from pump to gear box used the new hose.
You'll have to tweak it a little when you install, but its not hard and you'll know what I mean when you get there
