Default Okay so....

I own a 93 f150 extended cab short bed.it has the E4od trans in it. I've never have had good luck with E4ods. I've burnt up two in the same truck within 6 months. Well, needless to say I was not very stoked about it in this truck. I paid 950 bucks for the truck and drove it home and it has the 351w (pretty excited about that), I'll post a pic of it when I can.

Now that that part is over with, I have found out after talking to one of my friends. That a 4r75w will bolt up to it and if I do some switching (solenoid body mainly. The 4r75w is just a newer beefed up version of the AOD-E) I can run the computer and harness for an AOD and have a transmission I like without doin some extreme stuff. Or I can get a trans controller and be done.

Now here's the best part: I have most of these things here, including the trans (2005 f150 with the 5.4 is the donor for that)

I would do the external trans cooler, my 351 has 305k miles with original trans and engine with no rebuilds just regular maint. It has the tow package which has the external trans cooler to aid the standard radiator based trans cooling system.

I can't tell you which will last you the longest because I don't know how hard you are on them but for the normal owner flushing, filter change, and ext trans cooler will keep the E4OD going for the long haul.


Def. a great deal, worth every penny in my books.

That's what I'm thinking happened to this one, I'm thinking it wasn't taken care of very well. As far as the one I had that was rebuilt I don't know what happened to that one, it only lasted a week. Didn't over heat, correct fluid, correct fluid level. From all my transmission people, they've all said they are throw away transmissions. Even my trans rebuilders say they don't even rebuild them, they just replace them. Never been a fan of the E4OD.

Actually, the E4OD is a c6 (bulletproof) with overdrive added. The earlier versions had some issues though. They cleared them all up by 95, but apparently the earlier models need some upgrades done, not just a regular rebuild. Then you get back to C6 type reliability.
I can't tell you offhand what the upgrades are but Hemming's is usually a good source for that kind of stuff.
To swap over to a different trans though I think all you need is the trans wiring and an ecm for that trans and your motor (and there may or may not be a few other things, like driveshaft length and crossmember).

An E4od in decent condition should be fine in that truck. If you are burning them up then there's something wrong.

For example, if the rear gear is let's say a 3.31 gear and you put larger diameter tires on the truck it will cause the trans to work harder, building more heat, and possibly start burning bands and clutches. This is especially so when you get to drive and overdrive.

Before completely changing the trans out for a different one I'd give it a real thorough flush, then replace the filter and install a quality trans cooler.

Ohh no, I had two trans fail in a different truck. That truck ended up getting messed up beyond repair. This truck on the other hand, I drove it 52 miles home from the guy I bought it from, drove fine. Truck sat for a week, got driven very short distances, I was in the process of fixing things (u joints, brakes, and so on) then once I started driving it regularly, that's when it messed up. Had stock height tires on it, didn't haul with it, trans fluid looked nice and red like it should. I just have crap luck with E4ODs. I have a 96 f150 with the AOD-e and it has 400k on it. No problems, lol I guess I was just never meant to have a e4 haha

Actually both trucks this one and the first one were both extended cabs with e4ods in them, one 4wd and the other 2wd


Edit: on the note of the updates, yeah I know, I asked my trans guy, he told me about all the updated parts and such. He said it would be cheaper to go out to buy a 95 or 96 e4od then to hunt down the parts. Says a lot of parts for these are going obsolete due to age.

I just fully believe the e4od gods are against me owning one lol


Edit: edit: I also got to thinking about it this way, if I can make a 4r70w/4r75w bolt up and work
, these two trans missions were run in ford vehicles for years. In everything from cars, truck to vans and such. So parts are a dime a dozen. I can get the whole rebuild kit for a 4r for the price of a good e4 torque converter alone. It just seems more logical to me to switch out now. Then have to worry about when my e4 burns up again

had to have my e40d rebuilt after I bought my Flareside last year, it wasn't cheap but here is what I found out, I talked to 4 shops before deciding on the one that I let do my work, 3 of them said the same thing and all cost within 100 bucks of each other, the 4th shop was almost half the price and he couldn't be specific about the "upgrades"


properly maintained, it is a good strong transmission


clogged external coolers are a common problem


clogged internal passages are a common problem due to the weak parts breaking down inside stock versions and lack of proper maintenance


parts are readily available


good tranny shop knows all about the upgrades

My 95 has the 4r70w. 130,000 miles, 20 years, still going strong. Nothing to complain about there.
