Just wondering if anybody else has had or is having this same problem. Suddenly (fine when parked, then at next start) the check engine, ABS lights and the overdrive indicator light all came on at the same time except the overdrive light flashes. At the same time, the odometer and the speedometer quit functioning as well. This is in a 1996 F150 V8 w/ ps, pb, AT, ac, electronic speedo/odo with 198,000 plus miles. All the other gauges work fine and the engine runs great as usual. Anyone have any idea what's wrong or what to check short of going to the local dealer and spending a few hundred dollars for a diagnosis before any work gets done? Thanks-love this truck-it's a real work horse and just goes and goes.

 

Pull the codes to give you a idea where to start. But is sounds like the ABS sensor at the rear chunk or excitor ring inside the chunk.

 

Thanks for the reply but please understand I'm in no shape a mechanic so I need to know what codes and where they can be found. What the heck is a chunk and where is it? I do understand what a sensor is and what the ABS is so I'm not a total novice I guess.

 

Use the search button under solder joints. Several write ups on the subject, not sure if the symptoms were the same. One article had PICS showing what joints the needed to be resoldered.

As far as a "chunk" goes, I guess its his way of saying rear differential. I do the same when I can't spell certain "werds".

 

I read this TSB in this forum yesterday , and it lists a wire harness issue that can cause problems you are seeing.

 

Nah man I can spell differential that’s what I have called it and heard it called for years. I forgot we have to be politically correct so we don’t offend some differentials on here.Lol

Back to the op since it is a 96 it should be a OBII system take it to AutoZone or find someone with a code reader and they can get the codes for you. Also as far as the sensor I would recommend getting a Chilton's repair manual that will give you an idea where thing are and how they should work
