Even if the lifter totally collapses it shouldn't cause any major engine damage.

Yeah no need to worry my friends cherokee has had a lifter/piston slap noise on start up for around 80k so no need to worry. That oil treatment from lucas may cut the noise in half or all together. I have never had any luck with additives till I started using lucas stuff.

careful it could also be a wrist pin. we thought there was a dead lifter in my dads 460 and it ticked for like 20,000 miles then finally broke free and junked the motor. when its ticking if you give it a little gas does it go away?

Does indeed sound like a lifter and if so no damage will be done. Except to your pride. Difficult to find the one going flat but it can be done, alot of work involved. Most people replace the whole set.

the lifter loses prime the oil drains out while it is stopped running. After you restart it the pump starts pumping oil back up to the top hence the lifter stops ticking common problem of higher mileage car and trucks. Nothin uncommon, hydraulic lifters run with oil pressure. The oil pump pushes oil up thru them and thru the pushrods to the top of the engine hydraulic lifters have a spring and diaphram assembly to use the oil as a pressurization tool to keep adjusted and to have pressure on the rocker arms. Before hydraulic lifters you had solid lifters they require frequent adjustment and hydraulics dont.
