No Start Condition - I'm a Student
Hey All!
I have a no start situation with my 1995 F150 Xl Single Cab 4.9l L6 2wd truck. I'm pretty sure it will be something simple, but I did buy it as not running.
Here's what I've tested so far:
-Fuel pump doesn't turn on, front or back
-Distributor was loose when I bought it
-I am getting spark (only tested one plug though)
Here's what I have done:
-Replaced all of the spark plugs
-Replaced the old gas tank and fuel pump. The new one is now working
-Sprayed starting fluid in it (i get some pops but nothing close to running)
-Replaced the ECU with another "tested good" unit from ebay
-Changed positions of the dizzy to try to get it to fire.
If you have anything I can try that would be greatly appreciated. I am a student and I'm new to the forum so be easy on me. I have bought a fuel pressure tester but I have yet to try it (due to rain).
I am confused as to why it wont even fire up on starter fluid. Can anyone lend me their knowledge?

When you buy a non-running vehicle, the possible causes are nearly endless. You're going to have to do some diagnosis... A fuel pressure gauge is a good start. Click these & read the captions:

None of those are actual tests.Why? What exactly was wrong with the previous ones? What did you replace them with (brand, PN, source)?
You said the truck has front & rear tanks, but you didn't say which one you replaced, or why you chose to replace THAT one, or why ONLY one. The fuel system requires both pumps be connected & functional.

DON'T pull the distributor out before you check its current alignment, and post pics showing where the rotor points when the harmonic balancer is at 0°.

It is common for someone to install the distributor on the 4.9l a tooth off and think it's in the proper location. This is because the distributor has a great range of motion on the 4.9. With the 5.0 or 5.8 it's easy to tell when the distributor is a tooth off because it's easy to see the distributor would need to be spun too far to line number one up. Line up the 8degree BTDC on compression stroke on the balancer, then set the rotor at number one. You can get as close as using a timing light if performed properly. Get that proper spark verified then move back to fuel if you still have no start.

The timing numbers are etched into the harmonic balancer. You might need to clean them up so they are visible. Spin the engine by hand to line up the 8 degree mark on the balancer to the timing pointer. You need to have cylinder one at TDC of compression stroke to do this. There are some decent YouTube videos showing how to find TDC of cylinder one.
Edit. Some engines have just a mark on the HB and varying timing degrees on the timing pointer. Can't remember if 4.9 is like that or not it's been awhile since I've owned one.
