Default No Overdrive

What are the common causes of no overdrive? I read this craigslist add of a 1993 f150 4x4 with an auto 302 and it said that "
TRUCK HAS 302 MOTOR,AUTO TRANS,RUNS EXCELLENT,BUT OVER DRIVE IS OUT BUT STILL SUPER DEPENDABLE".

Just wondering if its worth undertaking it.

I had the OD go out on my 93 with an E40D, but it seemed to work fine in the rest of the gears. Then a few days later it lost drive and manual 1st. So if it were me I would stay away from it if it has transmission problems, even if the owner says it still works good

Is there supposed to be a light or something to show the OD is on or off or is it if the button is pushed in or not? '92 F150 by the way.

Well, the transmission certainly isn't going to heal itself.
