No problem, no problem at all. I have no hard feelings. It's very easy to take something the wrong way when online, you don't get to hear the context and sometimes we can't be there to explain right away that it wasn't meant to be rude. Then you get to build up that anger and things happen. I did ask my buddy Fast Hampster if it sounded rude and he said "Well, yes". It really wasn't meant that way. I just try to help the best way that I can. I try to write the same way I would speak to someone in person, so any rude sounding comments are accidental.

Just to throw my two cents in here about the tranny fluid. I have an '89 150 XLT supercab, 5sp 302 engine. The manual calls for "gear oil", which supposedly has a different viscosity and other additives taht were used "back then". I went to the Auto parts store to by Automatic transmission fluid (Mercon 3) for trannies over 50k and was looked at funny. Apparently there don't seem to be too many people that understand why auto fluid is used in a manual. remember, times and technology has changed. These guys on this forum really know what they are talking about, or at least there are enough information given for you to make your own decisions. I went with the auto fluid.

The gear oil is thicker, but it will destroy your 5 speed if you put it in there. It won't be able to get into all the little places the Mercon will.

You mean the Mercon? Your tranny calls for Mercon so you can drive it normally.

With your other question, did you mean motor oil or Mercon? Because motor oil is also thicker than Mercon, but if you really wanted to experiment I would put in motor oil instead of gear oil. I wouldn't do that either though. I would just use Mercon. At least if you used the motor oil the tranny would last longer than with gear oil but I really REALLY recommend using the Mercon.

The whining could be from either. Hopefully there isn't any damage from the wrong kind of fluid. I think you will notice a big difference with the right fluid in there.
