Default New Here

Hello everyone. 31, va beach. I currently just bought a 1993 F-150 XLT, reg cab short bed 4x4, 5.8 made in Canada. I got a good deal on it, 130k miles. It was sitting for about a year, threw a battery in it and it cranked right over. Everything appears to work as needed except for the wipers. I can rotate the switch and nothing. I push the fluid sprayer and I get fluid, but no wipers. This is my first f150 coming from many dodges and cummins trucks. (cant wait to get a new one, just ordered a 2015 cummins!)
Im curious as to where I should start to diagnose the wiper issue. I can do all the work, I just don't want to replace the motor and find out its a fuse, or a relay. I don't have a manual yet so im leaning on help from yall. The window on drivers side is not working properly, but ive diagnosed that as the gear bushings going bad. That's a cake walk.
Since it has been sitting I was thinking of doing a full tune up on it, are there any specific parts that's you guys suggest, as opposed to just buying a tune up kit with misc plug wires, rotor cap and such.

Since you dont know when things were serviced last heres a basic list to start with.

replace:
Dist cap
Rotor
Plugs
Wires
Air filter
Fuel filter
Trans filter and fluid
Flush cooling system
Front and Rear diff fluid

Then inspect for:
Ball joint for play
Steering gear, gear box, tie rods for play
leaking shocks
Rubber fatigue on brake lines, steering hoses, and vacuum lines.
check the charging system

for the wipers, use a test light to see if any power is getting to the wiper motor. If not, check the switch in the column for power coming in and going out. Once you know where there is or is not power at those 3 places that will tell you what to do next.

^this plus the following:

*Clean up grounds (sand until frame/eyelet shine, use brush on bolts)
*Clean any connectors you can find with quick drying electronic clean ($4 @ walmart)
*When you flush coolant system install a prestone flush kit ($4 @ walmart), it helps control the flushing as well as bleeds air from the system to prevent blockages, stays in permanently, also adding chemical flush for a couple days (follow directions) loosens a lot of caked on corosion.
*$12 on rockauto, less on ebay, get a 120ct asst of fuses and just replace them all.
*swap the small diameter plastic vac lines, I used these-22ft of 4mm
*Idler pulley and tensionor pulley (cheap online)
*Also check AC compressor pulley for grinding noise when you spin it by hand, if present then replace the clutch bearing.
*I'm a big fan of the e-fan upgrade, also getting a 130amp alternator.
*Check and replace/repack wheel bearings
*Suck out, replace, bleed brakes until you get fresh fluid-everyone forgets brakes.
*Clean the throttle body blades (esp. the edges) and IAC with throttle body cleaner. You don't need to do the entire TB unless it's caked on super thick.
*Inspect o2 sensor, if it looks original (probably still is) replace it. I went with Bosch and haven't had any issues.
*When you do the air filter don't forget about the small crankcase breather filter.
*Pull your PCV, shake it, if it rattles you are good, if not replace it with motorcraft ONLY. Also, if it isn't motorcraft replace it with.

Plugs most people say straight copper, I went with copper core platinum tip because they last much longer and hold there gap better (extra $0.50 a plug). It's more of a personal preference.

Ive got new rubber hoses and vacuum lines already. There are some tune up kits, I was going to purchase one, but I may just buy everything independently. Already bought brakes, I just did my land cruiser, I bought one of those pneumatic bleeders, pretty badass. Im mechanically inclined, just new to the ford 5.8 and was wondering if there were any specifics.

Welcome Kodi...had the same truck... that 5.8 is badass...check your wiper switch itself. mine started failing at intermittent speeds...then quit all together.. I'll bet it's the switch...read power at the motor...turn the wiper switch on fast ...you should see 12VDC at the motor if the switch is good...if not the motor is toast. Good luck... and nice low mileage find.. BTW .. I live in Kempsville

Test at the motor to make sure you are getting power to it, if yes you can try moving them manually while turned on as sometimes when they haven't been used in forever they need a little convincing. If you have power and manually starting them doesn't help then replace the motor.
