Default Need help with transmission questions

My dad just bought a 89 F-150 xlt 2wd 5 speed tranny. The speedometer, horn, and cruise are the only things that he was told were not working on the truck.

I climbed under the truck to check on the speedo cable and gear and found that someone had stuck it on the frame rail with some zip ties. I started looking for a place to install the speedo gear in the transmission and could not find one.

I look at the door plate and the trans code is "M" which is a M5OD-R2. So my questions are:

Could this be a m5od-r2 transmission from a newer (92-96) truck that uses the sensor in the rear end for the speedo?

If so, what are my options in fixing this to get the speedo working?

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

You need to get the tailshaft housing and speedometer gears from an '88-'91 M5OD. Had to do it for my '87 with a '96 5 speed.

That's what I was thinking. I should be able to find one at the local pick & pull pretty cheap.

Thanks for the Help!

Don't forget any parts. When you slide the drive gear off the tailshaft there is a bearing in a divot on the shaft that holds the gear still, it's just sitting there but it's usually stuck. A good magnet might make removal easier. Take the matching driven gear, or the whole end that inserts into the tranny. If you can, find something with the same rear gears as yours so the speedometer won't be off.
