my first shot at removing an engine
I just discovered that the oil pressure gauge reads the same thing with the truck on or off... so my new theory is "the sending unit is pooched." lol
truck is picked up from the exhaust shop, as expected the check engine light is off so I stick with my theory that it was caused by the O2 sensor not liking being so close to the atmosphere.
Unfortunately it's pouring rain out here so I can't really listen to how the engine sounds, although listening outside the truck close to the muffler I can tell it definitely has more of a throaty growl than before.

(By the way "Pooched" is copywrited, the first time is free. After that, you're going to need my "Pay Pal account info)
well the rain has let up for a bit so I enjoyed a (relatively) quiet drive home. From inside the truck I'd have to say the engine is actually quiet before. I can now distinguish 3 noises that come from the truck: the lower pitched hum of the engine, the high pitched whine of the power steering pump (I might try sean's famous power steering whine-be-gone technique) and a ticka-ticka from what I assume is either a leaking exhaust manifold or valve noise.
yeah I was surprised that the sending unit seems to have crapped out, it *seemed* to have been working prior to this... and by working I mean it read something lower when the truck was off than it did with the engine running. my indefinite plans to put in a mechanical oil pressure gauge just got moved up to the front of the line
