Hooptie, you seem to have done some research on the mufflers. What would you suggest for a 08 FX4 5.4 with Superchips tuner?

it comes down to personal preference.. but a true cat back is what is best... the factory exhaut is designed with many bends and kinks and these are designed to send exhaut back into the EGR system on these trucks... get rid of the factory set up and it flows better, you gain HP, and fuel economy... i like gibson exhausts because the are very good systems but they arent overly expensive... Magnaflow is good, and so is JBA... but you get ones like Corsa and Borla and they are good but way over prices and you wont see any more performance gains...but they have a specific sound

Just a muffler? Look at a universal Magnaflow. They are one of the least restrictive true mufflers out there. Granted, they are loud though, even running the stock piping. Otherwise? Dynomax ultraflows are great mufflers and are on the cheaper side. If you want to go expensive? a Corsa DB. Same style muffler, but no matting to deteriorate. Something to keep in mind, though this may be personal preference, I love the way old worn out Ultraflow/superturbo/magnaflows sound.

Full cat back? You'll gain power with any of them, even flowmaster. Most of that gain will be mid range due to pipe diameter increasing. You likely won't notice a decrease down low since you'll still have cats and its an auto. But best bang for buck is the low end single stock exit Magnaflow.

There is no such thing as a 4" 40 series. And why would you put 4" exhaust on such a low revving gas motor?

If I take it into my shop...Is what they do not a true cat back or are the simply swapping out the muffler and changing a small amount of piping?

Judging from what my cousin just had done...If i went with a flowmaster dual rear exit it would run me about 350 from the muffler shop...Will I not see gains in power with that? Or should I spend the extra cash and buy a "true cat back" from online somewhere.

Any reviews from a Banks cat back?

What about a Hooker?..(exhaust that is)

Not familiar with your shop. Some shops will fab up complete dual set ups. 99% of the "dual" catbacks out there are single in dual out mufflers with the piping to have two tips. Most shops won't work forward of the cats for fear of legal issues with DOT/EPA.
With a true dual set up with a properly placed crossover (~15" from the down tubes or collectors) you WILL see a power gain, I usually told people if they wanted duals for the look to go for it, but for power, a 3" single would be the better course, and easier to install as well.

As far as your cousin? I used to sell flowmasters all the time with the disclaimer that you will not see a power gain worth noting. Hooker flowpaths are awesome mufflers, basically a similar design to a dynomax ultraflow.

Best bets are the following:

Magnaflow 16613
dynomax 19387

Dynomax will be MUCH cheaper and just as good. Those are both 3" single stock exit systems. Those will both post power gains, still be nice to drive around, but still make all sorts of noise when you lean on the gas. True duals will post power gains above both of the above, but will have to be custom made by a shop that likes under the table work.Just don't go overboard on piping size. dual 2.5" at the most, and be sure to use a cross over.

Hope that isn't as convoluted to read as it was coming out of my head.

OK...SO If I went out and bought 2 magnaflows or which ever muffler I decided to go with, and took it to the muffler shop to have it installed, should I tell them i want 2.5" inch all the way back or 3" all the way back. You said if I were to split it stick with the 2.5 but if I went with a single go with 3"...What do you think?

O, AND THANKS FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE! I really appreciate it bud! I am clue less when it comes to exhausts
