What do you mean by changing the mirrors? Do you mean swapping a broken mirror with a replacement or going to the newer style "pod" type mirrors?

I like the old style mirrors better, IMHO.

If you have the old style mirrors, then you would need to 100% switch with 92-96 (I believe) doors with the newer style mirrors. You have to switch doors because I don't think the new mirrors mount to the door the same way. If they do have the same mounts you could just use the top threaded screw holes and leave the bottom holes open. If I were you, I would just deal with them, because finding another door without rust that isn't rusty and that is the same color is a pain. And then there is switching doors witch getting the gaps right can be a nightmare. If you do change doors, do yourself a favor and replace and replace your old hinges with new ones.

Here is something to look into, do HD mirrors stick out further?

I read through you process, and it sounds like you can actually do it corrctly if you take the time to go through all the measurements corrctly. But I do have one question
And that would be, what did you do to hide the lower connecting mounts for the old styl mirors? Maybe you said it and just couldn't quite visualize it. If you could post some pictures, that would be great!

there is not much you can do to hide the lower holes, short of drilling out the rivet nut, welding the holes shut doing some body work and repainting them.
best bet would buy some stainless bolts to put in there.

Exactly what fordtrucknut - said!
I drilled out the rivnuts took a body hammer (Pointy One) and slightly recessed the holes Tig welded up (Back-up with copper paddle) - body filler, lots of sanding and resanding and finally T/U Paint!

At the end of the day it is a 20 year old truck and plugging the holes with bolt would be OK - I had a buddy suggest I get a new er F150 emblem and just cover the holes - kind of an odd place for it though....

Good Luck!
