Default Mileage improvement thread

When I first bough my 95 F150 three months ago it was getting 14.5 mpg. The truck really was is great tune/condition, but there is always room for improvement. The truck is Cal Emissions so it does have MAF,302, Automatic, 3.08 gears, 2wd,regular cab, shortbed. Seemed like it should get better mpg than that.

So i set out to see if it could get better with a little work. Did a tune up, brass cap and rotor, platinum motocrafts, fuel filter, changed oils in engine and trans. Bumped the timing to 12.5 to start and just a couple days ago moved it to 14. Set the tires up to max 50, little stiff but oh well. K&N drop in filter. Cleaned intake, EGR ect... All this pushed the mpg to 16.25 when the timing was at 12.5, not sure what the move to 14 will do yet.

I drive the same route week to week so its easy to compare when changes are made. The drive is rush hour Interstate, so anything from 75 mph to stop and go.

I'm going to do a couple more mpg mods and see where it gets me. The first is an electric fan setup, I'll use junkyard Tbird setup. I want high CFM for towing ect... The second will be new tires this summer. Right now I'm running 30x9.50 All Terrains, I will switch to 235/75 all seasons. In my experience each size dropped or added should be worth a mile per gallon.

My goal is 20 but I'm not sure if I'll hit that with just these two more mods.

good stuff. when i got the truck in my sig, it was getting something like 12mpg hwy. i did tune up (motocraft wires, copper plugs, napa dist cap and rotor), knn air filter, water pump, 192deg motocraft tstat, timing chain, new fluids and filters all around, ignition timing bumped to 12deg btdc, 31" tires inflated to 36psi, my last hwy mpg calculation was close to 17.
i'd like to know how your bump to 14deg does.

I have similar mods: MSD Strret Fire Coil, Cap and rotor, Ford copper core plugs, K&N drop in, Ford Racing 9mm plug wires and timing bumped to 14. No ping, gonna try 15. You should have no problem at 14 BTC

So I bumped timing to 14 BTC and the MPG moved up to 17, a nice little improvement. Should be getting new tires in a few weeks, it'll be interesting to see what that does.

This last oil change I used the high end Purolator filter, that improved the mpg by .5 per gallon up to 17.5. Very interesting!

Going from stock to a larger size will introduce error in speedometer and odometer readings, which will give errors in MPG calculations. With larger diameter you will be going further than the odometer indicates which means your actual MPG will be better than what you calculate.

In my case I went from stock 235x75x15 to 31x10.5x15. The error for that combination is about 7.2%. That means my calculated MPG would be 7.2% lower than actual. The speedometer will also be showing lower than actual speed.

Here is an on-line calculator. Enter your stock size from your door sticker and the new tire size and this will tell you the error amount.

In theory even replacing worn tires with the same brand, model, and size will give you an apparent increase in MPG.

Have you changed the differential gear oil yet? I saw a nice MPG improvement when I put in Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90. Full syn gear oil would be a nice upgrade.

Also, I saw you said that you installed a brass cap and rotor, is the rotor brass as well or the standard silver/black colored contacts? I probably sound like a robot at this point, but I'm a huge fan of Motorcraft rotor part no. DR374B. It has copper and brass contacts.

I have changed the gear oil but didn't use synthetic. I'm installing a locker this summer so I'll give the synthetic a go.

Just used the BWD premium rotor and it's not brass, I'll see where they sell the Motocraft one. I couldn't find a brass one when I did my last tune up.

Can't expect much, as it is a truck haha but your best help for mileage, is keeping your foot out of it. If you drive like you've got all day, and just take it easy on the pedals in general. As far as mechanical advantages you can jack the tires off the ground and spin them, to make sure there's no drag. Check fuel pressure to make sure it's optimal, as well as any other routine maintenance checkups.
Avoid routine transport of unnecessary weight.

I was using the BWD select rotor as well prior to finding out about this one. I get mine from Advance. O'Reilly's has them too, but Advance has the better price. You'll have to get them to order it, though. Or you could try a dealer and see if they have it in stock. It made quite the difference after installing it. It fits a bit more snug than other rotors as well.
