DO NOT remove the sending unit from the thermostat. That sending unit is for the computer. The sending unit you need to change to fix the gauge is on the passenger side rear of the engine block just below the head. If that doesn't fix it then try the mechanical gauge.

Default 1990 5.8

Having a bit of a problem trying to get my temp gauge working. Just changed out the sensor on the thermostat housing and nothing. The needle is pinned in the low with good flow through the top hose and good heat from the heater. The turkey cooker thermometer says 150/160 on the idle with flow through the radiator. After I shut the engine off the needle floats up slowly to just below the cold mark. Is there another sensor inline here that needs to be changed out as well? Bad ground? Deliberately cut or modified wire to the gauge from prior seller? Gauge never worked for me. Prior owner says it did work but stopped just before I bought the truck. Not sure which way to go.

I am going to try to ground out the plug on the thermostat housing right now to see if I get some action there. Be right back.
