Default Manual hub question

So I assume most all our trucks come with an open front differential, if I am ever in the situation when I'm stuck and only spinning one front tire, could I just unlock that hub so it spins the tire that's not in the air or has no traction....

I doubt it since the monkey motion is in the diff. I would think the axle shaft is going to spin on the wheel you unlocked.

Alright that's what I was kind of leaning towards, is there any write ups of people installing lockers?

I haven't seen one.. its a good idea though... just need to pull it apart... google lunch box locker for a dana 44 + year model and specify front.. there some good ones available at a good price and you can install it yourself. Btw.. what are you going to go through that you need to lock the front? Its a great idea but I locked the back and it has been enough with one churning up front.

I have limited slip in the back. I have yet to get the truck stuck, I don't really take off road unless I'm takin my motorcycles out to the trails or to the track, just curious if there was a way to install lockers, it's one of those things you sure are glad you have when you need them.

for front axles, i always recommend a selectable locker like a ARB or OX locker.

i wonder if you could get away with a detoit 2.5 locker in the front with manual locking hubs, if you think about it it sounds like a good idea

Default Front "Lockers"

Most authorities I've heard of do not recommend L.S. in front; why, I'm not sure exactly, but I've heard the Tru-Trac worm gear diff. works real well in front. This makes sense. I would think a Detroit Locker in front would yank you all over the place.

Unlocking one front hub will give you NO front drive: try it! imp

Selectable lockers like an ARB is the best of both worlds. Be prepared to depart with a good bit of cash. On the other hand one could install an inexpensive lunch box locker, Aussie or lockright come to mind. Then you could do what you are saying, drive around with one hub locked for improved control. When you think your going to get in a jam simply lock the other hub. Get through the jam and unlock. In my judgement the TTB is not worth dumping a ton of cash into with a detroit or a selectable. Now, if you were going to do an SAS, that would be something worth adding a very high quality locker.
