Default m5r2 down for the count???

96, 5l, 5speed, 215000, m5r2
past week or so been having to go in and out of reverse to get it to engage. it hasn't been grinding or making any noises out of the ordinary. today however made a nice little clank as I was coming out of 1st and parking the truck. drove fine for another five or so miles with the occasional metal slapping against metal noise in stop and go traffic. pulled into the yard and tried to lurch forward... no 1st or 2nd. can move in 3rd and reverse but no 1st or 2nd. due to the miles was just gonna try and find a new/used m5r2. its at the shop now and I was hoping I could get some pointers on what should be replaced. i.e. clutch, shifter parts etc. thank you in advance and any suggestions will be appreciated. also a site would be great too.

The 1-2 shift fork may have finally wore out, which is why you had to get it in and out of gear to get it to shift. You can inspect the top end of the transmission without removing the whole thing by removing the floor plate under the carpet. Removing the seat, the shifter and pulling back the floor will reveal the floor cover and by removing that you have full access to the top cover of the transmission.

Dang thing never posted my reply. If the forks are worn and scarred the gears i would need a rebuild anyways correct? Remembered the other morning while I was backing I heard a grind then a clunk from what sounded like underneath the truck. As well as two clunks the day it died. I was more curious about what I should replace since the tranny will be out.

Usually you are fine with replacing the shift forks, the shift collars don't wear out that extreme. Without inspecting the transmission and the underside of the truck its hard to tell what else happened or whats damaged, the clunks could have simply been a u-joint thats been failing at the same time.

It's sitting at the mechanics right now. I guess I will pull the seat this afternoon and inspect. If the forks are all that's worn I imagine they aren't too hard to change out? Ill get on it keep it posted. Thanks guys.

Update: having it rebuilt! New clutch, rear main seal, and 12mth 12k mile guarantee. Said it should be around 1200. Not sure however what failed but in 3-5 days I should know something. Also he said he would be replacing the plugs.
