Default m5od small issue

In the morning now its getting cold, start truck in gear, take off, stop at sign, try to shift into 1st, its hard, it doesnt grind just wont go in, i dont force it but it will eventually go in, even shifting into other gears, idle is around 900-1000, it calms down in about a 1\4 mile to around 700, it shifts ok until it idles normal, other than that it shifts good, is it due to the high idle it is hard to get in gear or is this normal?

well when you figure it out let me know...lol

mine does that in second and I know it aint the shift fork....prolly syncros....

Mine will NOT go into 2nd gear when cold...but sometime if I let the clutch out it will go in smooth as butter and go....push the clutch in and no go...

it will NOT go back into first unless I am at a dead stop....so I either stop and shift into 1st again then try the clutch trick....if it doesnt go with the clutch in then let it out and retry...it will go in once or twice this way....

once the tranny is warm it shifts back into first and right into second smooth as silk but will NOT shift into 2nd gear without using the clutch which is very weird...

shift into 2nd without the clutch cold but wont warm...lol goofy I tell you

If I had the time I would crack open the case and see whats going on...its gotta be something simple....

Mine's hard to shift into first sometimes because my 1-2 shift fork is worn. Going to second then first helps. Not all the way in second but towards second then first. Sometimes pull towards second then first then second then first.

So probably the syncros are going, the trans has 175,000 mi on it, but once the idle goes down some it shifts good. Would the 80-90 gear oil contribute to it? I still havent changed it since I got the truck.

Yes the gear oil will contribute. It's supposed to have Dextron/Mercon III and will shift better with it.

if it means anything....

manual says 80-90 will kill the tranny...

I changed my fluid just as service suggest as the shifts felt gritty....after teh fluid change it still felt gritty...

I pulled the fluid and added 2 bottles of the Red Lucas Tranny fluid and then topped with the dextron fluid...that really helped...

after a week I drained some and added 1/2 a quart of 80-90w lube and it made a world of difference...smoother shifting with no gritty feeling...so it stayed...
