Low Power or Normal?
Hi all, first post here, been on many forums but my first Ford forum, (first Ford in general haha). I am looking to make this forum my new home away from from
I just bought a 1993 F150 long bed 4x4 a couple days ago, it has the 4.9L engine. I really only bought it for a work truck to go to the dump with and haul things around town, ect...
The engine has 160,000 miles on it and its lifted 6" and has 35" tires.
Now I know the 4.9L is not a beast of an engine, but I am starting to realize the engine doesnt have much power. On the freeway I am toping out at about 65mph on flat ground with the pedal to the floor. If there is an incline at all then my top speed really starts dropping off, I was on a small hill today on the freeway and was stuck at 46mph (according to GPS). Then I had to take a detour up the steepest hill in the city and I mean its STEEP.. I start going up it and I the speed really starts dropping, I go into 2nd gear and its still dropping, I hit it into 1st gear and then I had power to go up it just fine. Now I dont know my gearing and I had it in 2wd. But this just does not seem very normal to me. The engine is very smooth and sounds GREAT so it doesnt seem like there are any problems.
Does this sounds normal?? Is if just because of the lift and the huge heavy tires??

Could be from the lift and big tires...the 300-6 is a torque chugger not a high RPM screamer.....you need to find out what gears you have...a simple gear change will help immensely if that is one of the issues.....also, check your voltage at the TPS and make sure it's alright....Pull codes as well. www.fordfuelinjection.com
even with stock sized tires, the 300 isn't a screamer. but yeah, its the tires paired with (probably) stock gearing. either 2.73, 3.08, or 3.55. none of those are really ideal for 35's. go with 4.56's or even 5.11's with that tire size, or downsize your tires (best thing for a work truck)
That takes away from the "cool factor"
I really dont have a problem with its lack of top end power, I was just a little shocked, I was thinking maybe this truck is broken. As I have never EVER had a power issue with anything I owned.
Like I was saying its a work truck, it will hardly ever even get driven, and I guess if it ever becomes an issue in the future I can just re-gear.
Thanks for all the pointers guys!
