Default Looking for a truck...

I am looking for a truck on a budget and could use one asap. I can spend at most 3k for one. I know thats not working with a whole lot but its what I have right now.

I found an add for a 91 f-150 v8 5.0 efi 4x4 LB 114k miles He is asking $1,400 for it.

It has a few problems. This is all in his words.

  1. The exhaust system is falling off it and needs to be replaced.
  2. The truck is currently started by pushing in a pin on the steering column and stopped by pulling it out. I've been told that the tumbler needs to be replaced
  3. The driver's side window motor doesn't work
  4. The front windshield has cracks on the top and bottom
  5. The passenger side window has been replaced with plexiglass.
  6. The body is a little rough in places. There is nothing that makes me think it was in an accident but there are some dings and dents.
  7. The passenger side inside door handle is missing.

Am I asking for trouble thinking about this? Do you think with the price it not a bad deal after fixing everything? I would probably want to change both doors out for manual ones. I am not sure how easy or costly that would be to do my self from a junk yard.

The exhaust system... I read a post of people getting theres replaced for 250 - 300?

What are some of your thoughts? Worth investigating, or not worth the time.

Cheers,

Sambo

What state are you in? That's a fortune for a truck in that condition 'round here.

Seems a little high to me too. Those kind of problems would make me question how much maintenance was done. If they would take a shortcut by throwing in plexiglass for the window what other shortcuts did they take? If that's your best option for a truck it might be worth it to take it to a mechanic and see how much it would be to repair that stuff and have him check out anything else that might be wrong with it. Should be about $150 or so but well worth it.

114K miles?

More like 214,000 miles with little to low maintenance.

Don't walk, run from this one at that price!

i paid $3400 in philadelphia area for a 1993 with 30,000 miles and needed nothing but paint. i would stay away from that, i think you'll be wasting time and money on that one. ive seen some people on here gettin beauties for less than that.

Oh ya! This just screams the potential of it's experiencing exemplary engine/ drivetrain maintenance too! No doubt! The purchase price would only be the tip of the monetary iceberg! Unless your looking for a "project truck". Still too much money though.

You want some price negotiating room when shopping for this generation of truck (87'-95')? Buy one of these: http://www.handsontools.com/Equus-In...ol_p_5574.html , & take it shopping w/ you. Ask if you can run error code scans. It only take's a couple minutes on an engine pre-warmed to operating temp. "Many will be tested.....few will pass!"(although many codes aren't that big of a deal)

But, you'll have a better idea of what your buying, plus reasons to negotiate the price lower. Codes are codes, he can't deny they exist once you run the scans. Someone will have to deal w/ them. If it's going to have to be you, why pay his asking price.

Most codes aren't that expensive to do what's needed to cure the reason for the code. However, if you end up w/ a list that looks like a "Pick Six plus a mega number Lotto Ticket", that kinda tells you something by itself.

Hey, this one is in Easley and it looks pretty nice for $1,899.

And this one is a '94 for $1,950:

I only looked for a couple minutes on your craigslist and saw a lot of trucks that are in your price range. Just go through the years, and search 1993 F150, then 1994 F150, and so on and so forth until you find the truck you want.
