I'm almost halfway through my 4x4 conversion and as I was going through the front end and noticed the hubs had pieces of ball bearings, mud and a broken spring in it. I've read that the automatic hubs aren't much to brag about so I thought I should convert to locking instead of rebuilding.

I've read a bit about prefrence and most say warn premiums but I'd thought I'd get a second opinion plus I have a few questions.

First off are they worth getting from the scrap yard or buy new?

Second the front end is out of a 91, will hubs from 87 to 96 work or is there differences?

Thanks for the help

Definitely get Warn premiums and they are cheap enough, you might as well get them new. If you find some in a junk yard in good shape for VERY cheap, then sure that would be alright, but I wouldn't go out of my way to find used ones with the price of new ones.

x2

I put Warn manual locking hubs on my old 4x4. They never gave me a problem and they look really good chrome.

I have mile markers.

All the hubs are basically the same. As long as the internals are metal.

And if you're going from auto locking to manual locking you'll need to buy a different spindle nut.

It'll tell you on the box if you need anything.

Just go buy new

What wondertwin said is true, but it also depends on the number of bolts there are holding the hubs on. If the autos have 6 bolts, you're good. If they have 3, you'll need the conversion kit.

Yeah mine had 3. But the 6 bolts still go on fine. All the "conversion kit" is is a different spindle nut. SOOOOOO MUCH EASIER to tear down, clean and maintain as well.

I'm not sure what model your truck is but if you cant find any hubs at the junk yard check out the warnfactoryoutlet add the hubs to your cart for a discounted price, you should be able to get the premuims for an 91 xl ($102) manuals ($75). Generally if you call they can give you a better price then they show online.
