Yep, PVH was a mess. AVM sold manual conversion hubs for them for a while (might still, I'm not sure) but a number of people reported problems with them. Better to just lock them up completely instead.

Keep in mind that '01 was also the start of the 207hp SOHC 4.0 engine as a replacement for the OHV 160hp version. More changed than just hubs.

Sorry, but this is nuts. People all around the world leave manual hubs locked in for months at a time. It's not remotely uncommon, and it allows you to do precisely what Ford advertised with their 'shift on the fly' 4wd systems.
Shift on the fly would imply that you are doing reasonable speeds to need 4x4, highway speeds are not reasonable for shift on the fly. I've blown out unbalanced driveshafts on the highway, considering the lack of concern as to destroying a driveshaft I suppose that you've never had that happen. Shift on the fly is more of an "oh hey it snowed today I should lock them before I leave" not "oh its winter lock em for the next 3 months"

Ha wow I like how you call me a lazy *** right away....it's called breaking the gears in. Ya can't run 4x on dry highway so leavin the hubs locked atleast gives them a chance to wear in a bit before I go pullin up the mountains. No I don't run the hubs locked all the time...but once a month or so you SHOULD so the diff and tcase get a good lube job.

Don't jump to conclusions buddy.

Oh so now you’re going to resort to a break in period for new gears as an excuse for leaving them locked in??

By the way breaking in the gears is a controversial subject because when you buy a new 4x4 with 10 miles on it there is nothing about breaking in the gears.

Lots of people think the gear companies came up with the break in because of warranties. As a way to get out of it.
IE:
NO wear on the gear faces you must have romped on it before they were "broke in"
Now...
If you set them up wrong, then drive easy on them for 500 miles, then go crazy and break them, it will be pretty obvious that they weren't set-up right, and they won't be warrentied.

And yes companies try their best to void warranties.

This reads as though its getting to a religious level of right and wrong, and not understanding what each other is saying. I understand running for short periods, on some regular routine, with the hubs locked, or with the transfer case in 4 high, no matter the weather, to lube things and to keep the lube and bearings moving around. That makes sense. However, I wouldn't advise running for long periods of time on paved roads with hubs locked in, or the transfer case in 4x or low range. If for no other reason than reduced fuel mileage, but there would most likely be some un-needed wear and tear on the front drive parts (including u-joints and the drive shaft, etc.) by doing so. I don't make a habit of running the hubs, or the transfer case in 4x mode, or low range, for long periods of time if not needed.

Mine makes the steering tug side to side in two wheel drive, I wish I could afford an air locker.

Well I suppose you can call the guys at bronco graveyard an tell them their wrong. If you'd like to. I spent almost a grand on that center chunk...somebody tells me to break the gears in...that's what I'm gonna do. Whether it's right or wrong who cares...what's wrong with being cautious? Apparently your rich and can afford to blow stuff up by not being careful.

Far be it from me to tell you yer a jackhole for doin whatever yer tryin to do...wrong. So...if ya don't like it, shut yer shart hole and keep yer opinion to yerself. Ppl on this forum are looking for answers to their troubles...not opinions.

aww did someone get their panties in a bunch???

no where in my post did i say you shouldnt break in gears,

we went from driving with the hubs locked with a LS or locker, to you going on some rant about driving with them locked in so you could break in gears.

that is a suggested break in, not a constant all the time thing, like we originally were talking about.
