Mine has dual runners on the 4.9. My 5.0 has a single from the air box and splits into duals at the throttle body.

Mine 5.0L as well. I installed a K&N FIPK #57-2510-1 onto my air intake. Seemed to help with power output and mileage. Plus it kind of gave it that old school bbbwwwaaa sound when you hammer the throttle Lol

the single to dual intakes were on MAF trucks, the dual runners were on MAP trucks.

i cant get all technical with it because i dont wana screw it up. but basically MAF is much better at adjusting to outside conditions, like air temp. map i believe goes off air pressure?

I think you are basically right, and Im not sure if I can put it into the right words either. MAF is "Mass Air Flow" which monitors the amount of air being sucked into your engine from a sensor located usually, and on our trucks, near the airbox, mounted right in the air "tube" running from the air box to the throttle body. Very easy to see and determine if thats what you have, there will be a large rectangular part in your air path from the air box to the throttle body in the location stated above. The sensor actually sticks down into teh air stream and monitors the amount of air flow...hence the name Mass Air Flow. The MAP or Mass Air Pressure... or ... Manifold Absolute Pressure ... basically measures vacuum pressure inside the intake manifold.
This information is used to determine the density of the air entering the combustion chamber (in conjunction with the IAT (Intake Air temperature) sensor), which is used when calculating the proper air/fuel mixture for the engine, especially at WOT since the system is not in closed-loop at this time.
It is also used to help adjust the IAC (Idle Air Control) motor during idle.
Which is better? I dont reallyl know. I guess I would have to say the MAF since thats what pretty much all new vehicles have, although I dont see any downside to the MAP either, just a different way of monitoring it. My truck has MAP, not sure but I think in 95 they went to MAF? Maybe someone else can chime in on that. I read a lot about this about a year ago, not sure if I remember all the details.

here is a fairly good writeup on MAP and MAF... may help explain things a bit.
