Question Ideas for transport

I am reluctant to dump my 91 F150 4x4
I am moving a couple thousand miles and really would like to have it make the move. I've had this baby since 92 & it's been good to me. Giving me occassional grief but only cutting out nastily when it was still under warrantee. (Long ago).

OK, I know, drive it...
Nice idea but
1. I have something newer to drive
2. with a lot less mileage
3. the trip is one way, early summer 2k miles through a lot of desert
4. I'll have two hairy dogs with me.
5. it has 260k miles on it or close to it

Rental company's webpage claims my HD 2003 Ram 3/4 ton (look, it was a phenomenal deal, it only has 50k on it, etc.) isn't truck enough to pull it on a car hauler. I think they're nuts.

Shipping it is ridiculously expensive.

My thoughts are
say the heck with it and buy a car hauler
Argue the point with the rental company

Check into having it shipped as part of my household goods (ie IN the moving van.)

Any thoughts on any of this? [You folks, of course, are not going to think moving an ancient ford with high miles 2/3 of the way across the country is a stupid idea are you??]

Tell the rental company you're towing a Yugo.

A 3/4 ton ram has to be enough to haul it... My 1/2 ton is good for 11k so the ram must be good for that at least?

That rental company is mentally challenged if they don't think a 2500 will pull a f150 when my pa uses his frequently to pull farm equipment.

Are you sure they were saying your truck couldn't pull the trailer, or that the trailer wasnt rated for the weight of the truck, I tried renting a car trailer and had a lot of trouble finding something to hold a full size truck.

I purchased an ambulance out of California for my former company a few years ago. Initial shipping was $3500. I found another shipper with 2 other vehicles coming to Louisiana or beyond and got it down to $1200. The only reason it was that much was because of height permits required for a turtle top van on a flatbed trailer, not a low boy. I had another shipped last year from Tennessee to Louisiana and it only cost me $600 by itself on a low boy trailer. Uship.com is a great site to bid it out. Independent haulers looking for extra loads on an existing load is another. You can call around or even hit up your local truck stops. Walk in and strike up a conversation with any trucker and they can throw a name or two your way. I'd bet you could find a needy hauler looking to add to their load for a decent price.

Take the chance. I have no doubt that your truck will not have problems. Might as well have it die there than in a car accident. Also, more to brag about when people ask how good it's been to you.

the rental company is beyond stupid. like others have said, your 2500 can pull it, hell it can pull 2 of them....now like someone said, do you mean the trailer isnt rated for that much weight? your f150 should weigh around 3800-4500 lbs, which there car trailers can handle unless your going through some ghetto company....

the dodge should be rated for 11k minimum, my 97 250 is rated around that....

Thanks! I'll try Uship and see how that goes. I'm also going to talk to moving companies about having it inside a moving van with all my other earthly goods. This is a while off yet so I'll worry it out a while longer...
