ICM module failure
A few months ago I traced a misfire to my ICM and replaced it with a $60 BWD brand ICM from the parts store. I've installed my 3rd one over the weekend due to repeat failure. Everytime the module failed, the vehilce imediately died just like turing the key off. The parts store tested the first one because they didn't belive me and they said it wasn't detecting the rpm signal. I don't know how they tested it but thats what they claimed. They didn't test the 2nd one so I don't know what was wrong with it. Each one lasts about a month and this 3rd one will probably die here in another month. Should I buy a motorcraft one? Its $140 but it probably won't fail. I don't think I have a circuit fault causing them to fail because I still have the orignial one and the truck still runs with it plugged in, just has a misfire. I kept it for diagnosis purposes and so far it's kept me from being stranded.
You sure its the ICM and not the PIP sensor inside of the distributor?
I replaced my ICM with a standard motor products version last year, thinking it needed replacing, only to find out it was my distributor. I never put the motorcraft one back in and it has been running great.
