Hurst Shifter
So, have seen a few things about the Hurst shifter for our trucks. Anyone have one of these, and if so, what is the advantage of this shifter over stock? Been tossing around the thought of getting one, just dont know if its worth it.
5spd manual trans? They are better quality and tighter than a stock shifter, but if your stock shifter is loose just replace the bushings and it will be good as new, also if the trans is a little loose it might also be the shift forks.
Just replaced the bushings yesterday, man, what a great improvement.. got me thinking about the Hurst and if it was worth the cost, what the difference is etc... I mean if someone was to give me one, I would throw it in, but for what they cost, is it an improvement? Cant get much tighter than it is now, LOVE IT, compared to how it was before. I guess over time I didnt realize how bad it had gotten. Anyone know how long these bushings tend to last before they need replaced again under normal driving conditions? Since I plan on keeping this truck on the road for a very long time, kind of restoring it over the next year or so, if I should order another set of bushings so I dont run into not being able to find them in 10 years or something.

Only thing Hurst will give you is better self-alignment so its easier between 2-3 and 4-5 supposedly to reduce miss shifts. Changes the throw a bit and they do feel cool, got to play around with a friends 86 mustang and since he put his in it shifted like butter, you could use one finger to shift

I have the Hurst shifter. It's a short throw shifter it comes with stick boot and the top piece of the tranny. works well But you have to get use to it because the stock shifter spring puts the stick in position for 1st and 2nd the hurst puts it in line for 3rd and 4th .you have to pull it over to go into 1st and 2nd.It's so you can't accidently go into the lower gears.

Not familiar with shift kits.............does short throw mean the stick stays more centered in 2nd or 4th? I hate my stick since it comes so far towards the seat. I have a cup holder mounted on the floor and can only use the right hand cup holder. If I use the left hand cup holder, the shifter will knock my drink out or bust a styrofoam cup. I need new bushings in the stock shifter anyway and would love to figure out a way to modify the stick to be positioned more forward in 2nd and 4th gear.

Shorter throw means you don't need to travel as far to shift, making getting up to speed allot quicker and smoother. And I modified a cup holder double so it would clear my drinks, even in reverse
For a long time i was toying with the idea of a custom shifter, i would pull a stock one from a junk yard and cut off the bottom so i could weld it to a custom shifter and slip it in place of my current one.
