Default How to check starter when not installed

Hi out there, after a long time off another question for ya`ll !
I don`t know where I go wrong but I have three starters off a 302 which I want to test without installing them.... so far, so good, now trying to engage them never works, to my understanding I have to put power to the post usually connected to the harness and ground to the starter body....nothing!
Battery`s good, tried several jumper cables, tried working on the power post to grind down dust, grease and so on....Where do I go wrong??
The one starter is actually the one I was running in my Truck and had to replace because of a broken bellhousing at the gear, it was no powerful start before removing but at least it worked, why does it refuse to now?
Thanks in advance from " the old world "

Ingo

You have to ground to the body of the starter, put your positive cable on the post and then touch the small push pin connector and that will trigger the starter to turn and move the bendix out.

If you don't know what you're doing you can take them to most part stores and have them tested for free.

Not a chance to have it tested for free over here in Germany, if you are daredevil enough to go to a BOSCH store with american parts they`ll ask you for an appointment and tell you to come back maybe next week, since they`re busy.....

^^^ do this then. Just have someone hold it down or in a vice or something because its gonna kick around like crazy if it spins up.
