There is loud and there is music. If you want a deep rumble at idle then get high compression 460 V8, they can be had for real cheap. A small block Ford V8 can sound like donkey baying, or a symphony. The V8 sound to aspire to is the sound of the classic Ford 255 CID Flathead V8. Those of us who actually had Fords with this engine wish we had those cars/trucks back. Mine was a 1953 Ford Custom line two door with the 255 V8 three speed with overdrive. What a sweet car that was, and what I could do with it today. The cadence the Flathead V8 has is music to the ears. What is interesting is the classic Ford Flathead V8 engine is being manufactured again but much improved thanks to modern manufacturing technology.

Here is the best example of The Flathead sound I could find. This example is built up as a classic hotrod engine. This engine has a classic set of 4 Stromberg 3 bolt 97's. the exhaust is feeding into a set straight pipe long headers. A small glass pack, and I mean one about the size of a subway sandwich, on each side would take the rough edge off of the exhaust note and leave the rest. remember we are talking music here, not noise. What a Glorious sound

Not to worry The Local Farm and Ranch supply has good supply of Rugga-Chug brand exhaust systems. You purchase them according to the sound you want, John Deer tractor, Massey Ferguson, Caterpillar, etc.

2 1/2'' true dual straight pipes all the way to the corners with 5''x18'' chrome slash cut tips turned at a 45 degree angle. sounds heavenly! i lost city mpg so i put a flowmaster on but with straights running 65 mph on the highway i went from 14 mpg to 17.5 mpg. about to remove this dual in/ dual out 50 series an install two 10 series single baffle race mufflers

My suggestion is to install electrically operated cut-outs. We used to do this with cables. That way you can run straight pipes when you want to wake the dead, drive the Ricers mad, and be able quiet thing down when you don't want the attention of the Cop's. Now let me clue you into a little tip. Mid '60's Cadillac had an exhaust system with two mufflers. One which they called a resonator, and then farther back the muffler. It is the resonator I am pointing to. It is not much more the the diameter of the exhaust pipes, and is about 3 feet long it looks like a long thin glass pack, which is what it is. I temporarily removed the rear muffler on a 1967 Sedan Deville I once had. The car had the 429 CID V8 10.5 to 1 compression 340 Hp. with just this resonator the engine sounded like a WW2 Allison Aircraft engine. At speed, 115 plus mph, this 5500 pound behemoth sounded like a WW2 war bird.roaring down the highway. The problem was this glorious howl was unsustainable on anything like a long trip down the road, loud is one thing but hour after hour it is very fatiguing. This resonator tube is easily available at Midas mufflers. They work very well with cut-0uts
