Is this one of those ," Glass 1/2 empty, 1/2 half full questions? If you didn't spill the the glass in the first place, it probably doesn't matter. What happened to your codes? There's a high % of operator error. Anyway, the moral of the story is, if your going to do your own troubleshooting, you need certain tools at your disposal. Not having them, will cost you time & money & patience. You'll probably run out of the latter, first.
