Default Headers and exhause

1994, 302 engine... anyone have experience putting headers on their truck? Im sure there are... how difficuld is this with engine in the truck? Honestly did you notice any performance improvement, and not just a placebo effect? Is it really worth it?
I am going to doing pretty much a restoration of my truck over the summer, and a new exhaust may be in the works as well. had dual exhaust, pretty much a cat back system, more for looks and sound than anything. But now, if I can gain some seat in the pants performance, wondering if putting on headers is really worth doing. Also, does TRUE dual exhaust make much difference? Also, with the oxygen sensor ahead of the cat, any reason for not just doing away with the cat? Dont have to worry about inspection or anything where I am from, but if I were to put headers and true duals on, is there any ill effect from just doing away with the cat? With the number of miles on my truck I cant think the cat on my truck does a damn thing anyway at this point.
Also, what other things can I do to gain noticeable power improvements? Not talking spending thousands of dollars on engine upgrades. Have seen mixed reviews on throttle body changes etc... what works, what doesnt? Want it to stay reliable also. My engine is in excellent condition, and want it ro run another 260,000 miles. Have always changed oil every 3000 or sooner, always done maintenance more than required, engine has never been opened up except to put a new oil pan on, and was told from what they could see it is extremely clean, factory crosshatching still on the cyl walls, was told the truck may die from something, but it wont be the engine, said it was in excellent shape. Burns no oil, no knocking or strange noises, but wouldnt mind a little more power without breaking the bank, SO if anyone has any suggestions, lets hear em.
Thanks in advance!!!!
