Question Harmonic Balancer

Guys, i really messed up the timing chain cover, it was already messed up before. I am replacing it, as soon as i find out how big the bolt is in the middle of the harmonic balancer. Its bigger than 19mm and 13/16. thats the biggest ones I have around. I got me a 1/2" breaker bar and harmonic balancer puller today. The guy at the other autoparts store said I didnt need it, what a crock of S**T!!! This is my only obvious obstical at the moment, and would love for anyone to share this knowledge with me. and any tips would be AWESOME!!! Also I am changing the timing gears and chain while I am down there. Just so it doesnt come back and bite me in the *****.

Ya most of those guys are right off the street and they all have 5.0's and camaros and they think they are mechanics and know everything cause they work at an auto parts store. You might need an impact wrench to get the bolt out. You can use the the straight across slots, the 3 slots are for brand x balancers and use 3\8x3" coarse bolts.

I just figured it would be easier if you had access to one.

you deff need the puller pay 50 to get it and it works like 1 2 3 now getting the bolt off inpact deff the easiest a braker bar yeah pray it dont brake the head off now you can get a regual impact hammer u might not have enough room but what it is is it gives the striking force and the twisting force just you have to do it manualy but try the bar if you feel like it will snap get the hammer but always spary wd40 on it some say it dont work but what it does is it stops the bolt from geting hot aka seizeing

good luck

what i did is i got the 15/16 1/2 inch socket today for like 5 dollars, then went to autozone for a chain tool, looks like a lock jaw but with a chain on it. So I used the chain tool to hold the pulley infront of the harmonic balancer, and then set the bracket with the ac and power steering pump still on (weighs alot) on the tool to give it resistance and to keep the pulley still. (of course making sure it was on 0 degrees aka top dead center.)
Got my 3/8ths drive 9/16 socket out and took off the bolts holding the pulley on.
I then proceeded to put the chain tool on the harmoic balancer, to keep it still. and then i went to get my 2 foot 1/2 breaker bar with my new socket and took that off.
Then the puller came into play, it had a 5/6 area on it. the balancer popped right off after that. But then I hit a snag, the view finder for the timing is connected not only by two bolts but is also connected to the vaccum/smog pump whatever that is. So I tried to get that bracked off, the one with the alternator and the pump on it. But I cannot get one bolt off (stripped it). So I had to go to work, so the truck is almost there.

Any advice would be awesome!!!!

If there are no wires or hoses around, take a torch and heat around where the bolt is, do not heat the bolt just where the bolt goes, not too hot, and if you have an old metric socket I think around 12 or 13 mm you might be able to tap the socket on and get the bolt out, and 6 point sockets work best.
