From the 96 specs book, that truck with those gears would have a gross combined allowable rating of 11,500 lbs.
With the 4x4 option it shows a max trailer weight of 6800 lbs.
Other years are probably close to that. Best to check for your specific truck because you can get into all kinds of legal problems if you're overweight. Not to mention not being covered for insurance.
Keep it legal
Carry a printout of those allowable specs for your specific truck with you.
When calculating weight, don't forget to factor in the weight of your fuel, passengers, food gear and camping equipment. The guy on the side of the road who suspects you of being overweight and makes you run it over a scale certainly will.
But as was mentioned, if your truck can legally tow it is one thing; it was rated for so much new. 20 some years later you want to make sure everything is tip top condition before you make it do what it was expected to when brand new. And buy a gold card auto club membership.
