Ground Cable Replacement
I need to replace the grounf cable on my 1989 4.9l because its pretty torn up. The only problem is that the one currently on there is a long one piece cable that goes from the battery to the starter with a bracket that holds it to the frame but not grounding it. I went to carquest to get a new cable and the guy said the original cable and set up was a two piece with one cable from the batterly to the frame and from the frame to the starter. I cant find a hole to fround the new cables to. Should I just buy a long one piece cable and not worry about grounding it to the frame or what? and is it normal to have just one long cable or two cables conected to the frame?
When I changed mine I got the long single cable. I took the old one off and opened up the bracket that was crimped on it which attached to the frame. I then stripped off a small part of insulation from the cable at the matching spot in the new cable and hammered the bracket on the new cable. If you can't find the hole where the bracket was screwed to then make a new one with a large self tapping bolt, anywhere on the frame where it won't be damaged by moving parts. Or use one long one to the starter and another short one from the starter to the frame.
