Default Gears

I have a '94 F-150 XLT super cab 4x4 with 31" tires and the stock 3.55 gears. I would like to have more power when towing and to go up hills on the high way. Any slight grade change and the truck down shifts. Will 4.11 gears bring me back to stock?

Post what motor you have, it is pretty common for these trucks to want to downshift on highway hills and the tire size doesn't help. One cause of this is also the age of the cats, more so if your truck uses any oil. One thing to keep in mind is on a 4X you should change both difs to change gears, otherwise in 4wd your wheels will be set at different speeds and can blow up the transfer case. Just something to think about as far as the cost goes. I know some AWD's not rotating the tires can be enough to fry the case.

My truck has the 5.0 with 115K miles. It uses very little oil. I knew that I would have to change the gears in both differentials.

3.73 will be close to the stock with 3.55 the 4.11 will give slightly improved acceleration but at a lower fuel mileage

Is it worth going to 3.73 from 3.55?
