gear selector indicator cable
I have a 1988 Ford F-150,4.9 v-6,a/t. I was replacing the ignition switch on the column, and it seems that the gear selector indicator cable,(yea, the white plastic tube, with a wire running through it),has broke. I could use some info./tips on replacing this. Thanks.
I just replaced mine yesterday, do to the fact that it was very loose. I got one from a pull a part auto salvage yard. They're mostly the same as long as they have the same amount of gears listed on the selector and around the same year give or take about 5 years. It has a screw on on the inside on the right of the steering wheel. If you unscrew that, and get something to disconnect the cable which is connected with a loop around a small metal ball stud ( I used a small hook tool), then all you have to do is disconnect the other side from the instrument cluster and it's out. Then work backwards to put the new one in. I can't really explain how I disconnected that part... I had trouble but I played with it enough and it disconnected. It was attached to a spring and a track with notches in it ( which holds it in place of the gear you've selected). Mines a 93 so it may be a little different. But I hope I could help some.
back in highschool, lol about 10yrs now....
mine in my 80 ford broke, I used spidier wire braided fishing line to make a new cable, it lasted the 3 years I had the truck, and at least two more that I know of after I sold it.
