Fuel system problem
My truck sounded like it wasn't getting fuel when i tried to start it so i went and changed the fuel filter. It ran for about 10 min before i parked it. After trying to crank it up again after having sat another 20 min it sounded as if it was getting fuel again. My F-150 is a 1987 2wd with a 302 and is fuel injected. Is it possible that it is a fuel sensor or something or did i maybe put the fuel filter in backwards, i didn't see any indicator arrows on it in which side goes towards the front or back. If ya have any input please let me know. Thank you
The filters are marked for direction of flow. If yours isn't I'd have to think it was particularly inexpensive ?
But sounds like it's getting fuel doesn't make it because (1) you should have two types of fuel pumps on that truck - in tank lift pump (low pressure) and frame mounted delivery pump (high pressure), so sound doesn't tell you they're both working, and (2) even if both pumps are pumping that doesn't tell you that you have enough pressure. Your truck runs at 30 to 45 psi (usually about 42) so if you had 25 psi it wouldn't run.
Listen for the in tank pump, listen for the in line pump and use a fuel pressure tester to see what psi you're getting at the fuel rail (injectors).
