Fuel pump help?!?!
So i'm swapping out my 91 302 EFI for a 85 351W carbuerated . my 91 has an electrical fuel pump and the 85 is mechanical. would it be better to stick with the electric or switch to mechanical? and if i go electric would I need a regulator or something because the carb only needs like 8 psi and my pump electric pump delivers something like 40 psi? or if I go mechanical what do I do with the electrical pump? just leave it in and disconnect it? and would I have to run new lines from the tank to the mechanical pump?? sorry if any of that got confusing! Any help or input is appreciated! Thanks
youd need a regulator and return line. im not sure if a mech would pull the fuel out of the tank. if it were me id go with the mech. one less thing to worry about. if the mech goes out its easy to fix, and cheap. you might have to pull the elect. units out and bypass the electric motor with a direct hose for the mech to suck the gas out. youll also need a valve to be able to switch between tanks. should be to hard to figure out.
I am considering doing a swap like this only a I6 to a 351W and this is what seems to be the most common thing that others are doing for the fuel.
If you go with the original electricial pump you will need a regulator that is made for carb swap with a bypass built into it and a return line.
Most are going with an older type fuel pickup for the tank if using the mechanical pump and taking the pump out of the tank.

alright so if i do go with the mechanical pump should I just leave the electric one in and plug up the old fuel lines so theres not just a big hole in the top of the tank? and would unplugging the electric pump make me lose my gas gauge?
on a buddies truck we just pulled off the in tank pump. and ran hose on the ends down to the bottom of the tank. and he unhooked the factory line off the tank to motor and ran a new line from there. leaving all the factory stuff. then he ran a 40 dollar mr gasket carb motor electric fuel pump from the parts store. and put the old see thru inline fitlers on the fenderwell after the pump.
