They're selling the oil cause you need a license for the r-12 Freon. My systems still r-12 because it was cheaper to evac it, change the seals & recharge w/ r-12 than what's required for the conversion.

He said oil, but I think he means freon. Freeze 12 is a replacement freon, I think.

Ymeski, how was using R-12 cheaper than the conversion? The 134a conversion kit comes with everything needed and is about $30 while R12 would cost around $100 to fill your system.

newer freon works with the old oil and they are compatible to mix no a days..I do it all the time...

evac the old R12 out and do nothing but add 134a and it gets cold...as long as the screen is clean the the dryer isnt full of oil...

Thanks Dr, I will give it a try, did you have to get the fitting for the r134a in place of the r12 fill valve?

Yes you need the fittings. The conversion kit comes with the fittings, freon and the hose to fill the system.

or you can buy the just the fitting which is what I do... Walmart had them and just about any autoparts store has the fittings...they are 3.99ea I bought a bag of 10 last time...

I just use the same high pressure fitting from vehicle to vehicle if I use the gauges...I only use those to diagnose and issue if it doesnt get cold..

Probably, more to do w/ dropping it off at a shop just before a 2000 mile round trip & saying "Fix it, leaving town in an hour!" I only needed a pound. In California anyway, it's illegal to buy or sell R-12 w/o a Refer license. Geeze, what next, a license for tooth paste?
