I finally got my speedometer working today. When I swapped in the 5 speed I used a '96 tranny which doesn't have the tailshaft housing machined to accept the speedometer driven gear. When I got my rear end the truck I got it from had the housing I had been looking for for months. I took it too. The only problem was that I didn't know if the tailshaft was machined for the drive gear. Well I went to change the housing and the tailshaft was machined, so I slipped the gear on. All is together and I finally have a speedometer again after months, hooray! Very helpful when your gas gauge doesn't work. It seems like the speedo may be off, but it's been so long since I've had one I may be wrong. I used the speedometer gears for that rear end, but I have more gears to try if it is off. I've only got 3 other transmissions under my house.
