i have a complete 351w. im going to take it to a machine shop to have the block reworked. what im trying to do is get more horsepower and torque. the truck is a 90 f 150 sitting on 35. any advice on modification i can do to the block to give me more power and torque without stroking it.

you can shave the block or the heads but you have to know clearences. the biggest performance options are new heads and a new cam. it all depends on what you want to spend. if your having it done your all ready spending a fair amount as far as what you can do to the block all i can say is have it blue printed match the pistons new bearings and you can shave the deck that will give you higher compression.

500 hundred thats plenty a cam costs about 130 depends what you want and what trans you have what you want comp cams and crane cams are i feel the best look around some tell you difrent lifts more high end power some are so strong you have to modify your trans if you have an auto i would get a comp cam set up with hydralic roller set up meaning roller cam roller hydralics and roller rockers

ok there both the same except one has rollers one doesnt having the rollers causes less wear and higher rpm its a performance part but also a street part. its a little costly for this whole set up but it shoud deff give you a noticeble improvement and if you are haveing it built ask the machineist he will tell you tell him you only have xxx amount and your looking for xxx amount increase and he will tell you what duration and lift you need but going with a roller set up is a smart move i wish i did but i didnt have enough i built a 302 with 11:1 compression cot me a total of 1k as far as dont know thats just a nother reason why you should do a little reshearch and learn from experience rebuilding an engine is rather simple rebuilding it for racing that takes a lot of skill

yeah a good one

well thats a good start some minor tricks is get better heads like the gt 40 heads off explorers or trashed cars. polish and port deck theres alot you can do get domed pistons, flat like i said its all a bout what your looking for you could get 200 hp or 450hp depends on set up read some performance mags and talk to speed shops the like to talk like i said the big gains are the valve train and heads ever thing else is minor example headers are a 25hp increase cam easy 100hp heads anothe 100 but remember you can build an engine for 1k or 20k trust me money goes fast as race cars when you start buying forged piston h beam conectiong rod forged flat top pistions with aluminum heads and a roller setup your talking easy 4k read up decide a setting and reach your goal add or subtract parts get it perfect to your goal

best of luck Tom

"cam easy 100hp heads anothe 100" LOL!!

there isn't a cam in the world that would pick your engine up 100hp!!
With that said you'd have to have some really, really nice heads to ever dream of picking up 100hp with a cyl head change.
If that was the case we could all go spend $2000, ($1750 heads & $250 cam) and we would all have 410hp trucks!!! Good luck with that!

boo... I was getting excited to get my truck back after the cam upgrade going in this weekend :-)

cam + good exhaust + gt40 heads could get you in the 300 hp range without too much pain.

back to the original question... if you have 35's on your truck and are experiencing a lack of power, what is your gear ratios? Have you thought of regearing the axle to get back into your power band?
