Changing the oil at X,xxx miles isn't really that big of a factor on the engine being able to run, my mother had a 94 Taurus that she kept full of oil but only had it changed once, maybe twice, a year. Had that car from new and put 250k miles on it before trading it in for a car with better mpg's, she was still getting 22mpg (highway and in town together). I wouldn't advocate doing this but as long as the engine has oil and doesn't get overheated they will last quite a while.

I have to add to this though.....been using Supertech synthetic 10w30 in my '94 and '95 F150, my wife's '02 silverado, my son's '03 sierra and two 722cc twin cylinder mowers with absolute success. Love this oil. I run 8k miles on all of the trucks between oil changes and motorcraft filters on the fords and wix on the bowties and mowers. The Supertech is still opaque after 8k miles with no signs of breakdown or burning. I have not sent any of the used oil off for analysis, but see no reason to do so at this point.
