Ok maybe this is stupid but is there any way to backflush the system? Any solvents I could try if it may be something as simple as crud plugged up somewhere? Doubt it...but if possible, worth a shot?

yea oil galleries and blow them out with compressed air.

any way you could use a cell phone and record a video of the knock close to where its coming from and post it? from cold start up for a few minutes....?

you know what wait a minute.....

are you sure this isnt an exhaust leak at the manifold?

when a manifold gasket lets loose or the EGR pipe cracks at the exhaust it can sound like a rod till it gets warm and seals.... you might start it cold and run your hand around and try to feel the exhaust...

OR

take a 12 inch piece of Brake line and shove the tip in a rubber hose about 2-3 feet long and use that as a Stethoscope to try and locate the noise...

I'd check around the manifold and the doughnut gasket.... and EGR and AIR pipe fittings....

I had an truck come in once with a knock owner swore it was a rod hammering... all it ended up being was one of the AIR tubes cracked.... I JB-Welded it and knock was gone

I guess maybe its hard to tell without hearing it... a single knock can be rods/mains, chain or exhaust... multiple knocks/rattling can be low oil or starved oil... what does it sound like to you?

Single knock...I posted yesterday about the egr pipe is junk...concerned if that could get any dirt into the intake. I would think that may be possible, but I can feel it on the oil pan, although that egr pipe sits darn close to that spot. It's not a bang, bang, bang sound...but it is something that is either getting oil as out warms up or getting warm and closing up. Exhaust would make sense as it's about the temp it starts getting hot. I was under it...exist was getting pretty hot and then it stooped so had to end my investigation. This is me we are talking about....couldnt be that easy although the front exhaust is original.

And I just noticed the egr pipe. The knock I first noticed maybe a month or so ago. Hmmmm

well get under there and investigate a whole bunch... exhaust is an easy fix... cap off the EGR tube ends for now for a temp check....

Had to pull it out of the building to let my son get a go kart out... Crawled under it real quick and there is a small exhaust leak where the egr tube connects, it's cracked however that is not where the knock is coming from. Once again, warms up, knock goes away and I cannot make it knock no matter what I do, idle, rev it, put it in gear and put a little load on it.. Wouldn't a main bearing continue to knock? Could be piston slap I imagine but find hard to believe, but then I find bearings gone bad hard to believe. Warmed up you would never think a thing was wrong... Investigation continues. Would any kind of a engine flush be worthwhile to try? Although when they had the pan off 2 years ago, and I haven't really driven it that much since, they said "that truck may die, but it won't be from the engine" said it was super clean from what they could see.

DO NOT use any flush on the engine...

If you can put it in drive and work the throttle to light to full throttle and not reproduce the knock at any variation I would be strongly inclined to say the bearings are fine... that will also pull allthe chain slack out too...

I am wondering if you have a manifold gasket sealing issue or a cracked manifold... but like I said if you are 100% sure its coming from the pan? you would hear it on both sides of the pan... hearing a knock on one side leads me to believe exhaust and the noise is bouncing off
