to me that sounds like the AIR tubes are busted/cracked at the back of the heads....

and a little tappet noise.... it sounds like an exhaust/AIR noise to me but its hard to tell

good job on the video though

What are the AIR tubes? I feel stupid asking...might just be having a brain fart. So if it's that...nothing to really worry about, but get fixed?

AIR tubes meaning the AIR injection system to the catalytic converter and the heads from the air pump.

I got under it again, there was a pretty good crack in the egr tube. Had some exhaust patch tape and sealed that up for now...it did quiet out down alot more than I thought it would. Still have the tapping, dont believe that is something I have to be extremely worried about at this time.

Drove it a mile around the section, pulled in here at home, My son walks over and says "it sounds alot better". Well it warmed up and sounded normal. I sure can't see any other cracked or damaged pipes, but I'm sure tracing that down could be pretty difficult. From what you have heard...and think...ok to drive for a while yet? Should I run a thicker oil than 10w-30? I have run 5w-30 it's whole life. Time to run something a little heavier maybe? Think the Lucas oil additive would or might quiet it down a tad?

I Like Castrol Syntec 20w50 for summer and 10w30 for winter... and add the Full Synthetic Lucas HD oil additive... I also add the Lucas ZDDP because I have a flat tappet cam... if yours is a NON-Roller cam you also need the ZDDP...

At this point I am thinking your engine is fine other than normal wear so it would be fine swapping oil again prolly wont quiet it as I think you prolly have multiple leak issue... there are AIR pipe fittings in the back of the heads that like to rust just like the EGR tube....

Well it does appear there may be a leak or three somewhere, but from what I could see when I got under it again, they looked ok...but it wouldn't take much...and look like a fun time to change, how the heck would you get to them? Does it hurt anything? I have seen that if you have always used conventional oil like I have, and then switch to synthetic it can cause leaks? If I stay with conventional, should I use the non-synthetic lucas? Also, how many ounce bottles is the zddp you get? Only thing I can find is their 16oz. Break in additive. Is that it? What do you think of zddplus? And I assume whatever additive you add you substitute that for the same amount of engine oil? Not in addition to...right?

the old myth was that synthetic would leak... I;ve switch many with high mileage and no leaks.. my GM had 240,000 on it when I switched it over...

Yea the 1-16oz bottel and I'll add that without subtracting but you will sub a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer for a quart of oil...

I am sure the ZDDPPlus is fine too or even using a quart or two of break in oil

Just sitting here pondering... must not be since you are using it, but it would seem that 20w-50 oil would be a little thing upon cold starts on our trucks wouldnt it? I mean the factory recommends 5w-30. I can understand that with the miles I have it could do some good to run a heavier wt oil, but wouldnt that make it take a bit longer to circulate through the engine, and put more stress on the pump at startup? I used to have a 1972 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Plus... had the package that made it look just like a Roadrunner, anyway, in that I used to run 15w-40. Would that make a good compromise between the two? And the really weird thing, when I first start my truck it doesnt make the noise for the first few seconds. Maybe its because when first starting it wants to high idle, so I tap the throttle right away and it settles down to idle speed, and then the noise starts.
On another note, with a manual transmission, it states to use Mercon/dexron II ATF, and I have been told you should use nothing but that. However, is there an additive, possibly lucas, that WOULD be a good thing to add. At the same time, she has gone for 18 years and 260000 miles with what I have been running, so the thought of changing things up makes me question. Everything is all factory original, engine, transmission, CLUTCH, even fuel pumps are factory original (cant believe it but they are). I was never a Ford guy before this truck. Back when I bought her though, it was a "little bit" cheaper, was exactly what I was looking for as far as options, reg cab, long box, manual, and a rather unique color combo, just never saw a lot of them. Would see one every once in a while, but times were far and few between. Seems people either love it or hate it. I do know over the years I have had MANY compliments on it, even had a couple think it was a custom paint job the first couple years when it was new LOL. Ok, I am getting off topic and rambling, I tend to do that first thing in the morning.
