Default Emissions system effects

On a 1987 f250 (assuming it will be the same on a 150) what effects will the emissions system have on the truck? Like gas mileage. I just bought it and the belt that drives that whole system is not even there. I’m wondering what all will happen when I add it or will nothing happen?

Not much effect on gas mileage
Hopefully the air pump is not noisy after you get a belt on there

Ok thanks, from what I’ve heard all the whole system does is just pump more air into the exhaust system is that true?

Yes. There is a lot to the system with tab and tad solenoids, valves and one way valves etc.

The idea is to make the converter hotter by adding oxigen. The converter may have a higher tendency to eventually plug if your engine is not running top notch.

Ok thanks, so will there be any true harm if it’s left as is with the belt off?

No, as long as you have no emission testing to deal with.

I'd like to see you have and run an air pump
We all breathe the stuff
I also think it helps the catalytic converter live by getting it up to temperature.
If you get a rich mixture without your air pump operating, it will plug up your cat faster IMO
IT is less than half a horsepower to run an air pump IIRR
It might be too late for your pump
If the belt is gone for an extended period of time, the pump will be noisy has been my experience
