E40D.. Need Help
Hey all i am new to this forum. So if this question has been posted before please direct me to where it is. Here goes i have a 1994 f-150 with the elusive E4OD in it. My truck has 200xxx miles on it. It was shifting really hard in to all gears. That lasted for about a month. then bang no forward gears.just reverse. Long story short found a used E4OD for 400.00 I bought it put it in. That was about 3 weeks ago. The trans shifted excellent for about a week. Then it started acting up. one day pulling into drive way went from drive to reverse and it locked up. would not move. So i left it sent for about an hr or so. went out and went to reverse and it banged into reverse and i just parked it. statrted up the next day and it shifted like a dream?????????? after some research found out VSS was bad and changed. Seemed to fix it. But how wrong was i. Now i put it in reverse and have to give it a little gas before it will engage???? then it doesnt always want to down shift after a stop?? Starts in Second. Then other times it acts like there isnt a problem and shifts like a brand new one??? My o/d light flashes sometimes.. I need some help i have exhausted all my ideas of what it could be. Thanks in advance. appreciate all the help

O/D light flashing means that your trans is falling apart. Says it in your owners manual.
Did you clear the codes? The computer could still be in panic mode or whatever. In the owners manual it says the computer will cause the OD light to flash and make the trans shift weird if it senses that the trans is about to die.

I would pull the codes and see if there are any related to your tranny. Does 1 and 2 work and Drive is where all the troubble is?
Make sure your fluid level is full.
Hope this helps.
Make sure your fluid level is full.
- Unhook your battery for 10 minutes after pulling your codes to clear the computers memory. Then try it again. drive around and if things are better then it's not a physical problem it more than likely a sensor or selonioid.
- check your Neutral safety switch.
- check your MAP sensor
- check your TPS.
- Look at your pan and look for dents. If there is a dent on the side of your pan one of your seloniods could be faulty which would also cause intermittent problems. This should come up under a code though if you pull the codes.
Hope this helps.
The only code i am getting is code 632. o/d transmission cancel switch/ no action during self engine run test. Like i said my trans does not do it all the time. it is intermitent. I will check all those sensors. Cause before the old one took a crap it was doing all the same things. shifting hard, not down shifting etc etc. Now the new one is doing it but only intermitent. Im at a loss. Thanks for the help i will post back and let ya know if i found anything oout with those sensors.
I had the little rubber ring inside the conector pop out and sit at the bottom before. When I tried to plug the harnes in it would hit it and wouldn't seat all the way. It would be hard to see in there with the tranny installed. If you unplug it and used a little mirror with a light you could make sure it is clear and seating all the way. If it isn't it will cause intermittent problems.
with this trans being all electronic what does the TPS sensor do. Is it the one on the side where the linkage is? only guessing but would assume that it tells the computer what postion to be in. ( drive , reverse, etc.) I have to assume since my last one did it and now the new one is doing similar problems it has to be a common link in the electronics some where. what are the chances of me getting a trans that is doing the same thing???? But i guess weider things have happened.

Most likely, the MLP Sensor is the issue - it can cause all sorts of issues if not adjusted properly. It's on the driver's side of the trans where the linkage connects. It has a ring that goes around the linkage shaft, and that ring has a line on it. There is also a line on the front of the sensor. May need to wipe if off with a rag to see the lines.
With the trans in neutral (and parking brake set!), those two lines should align perfectly. If not, loosen the two bolts holding the sensor on and give it a twist. This is not in a great location to see, but once you're under there you'll see what I mean. Might even be wise to remove the sensor to clean it up and see what you're up against - here again, remove/replace with trans in neutral.
If that doesn't get you fixed up, the TPS sensor is on the throttle body - on the v8's, it's on the bottom. Not sure if the 4.9 is on top or bottom. This would be my next target, and you'll need to remove the throttle body to get it off if it's on the bottom.
You said that you replaced the VSS, and about the only other sensor that could be affecting the trans is the RABS - it's on the top of the rear diff - one bolt, one plug, and you're done.
