E-fan Conversion
Your temp probe needs to go thru the rad fins as near as possible to where the upper rad hose comes in . Also, I'm wondering why you have the gap between the fans and rad? Factory fans are always mounted directly on it. Its more efficient that way.
The probe is as close to the upper hose as possible, directions said not to insert the probe through the fins, also the diameter of it would have seriously damaged the fins. As for the fan I wanted to keep a "buffer zone" so it wouldn't rub the radiator and potentially cause leaks. Factory fans use the shroud around the fan to pull air through the radiator, they have the privilege of have mounting points and exactly proportion fans, I didn't. Done a lot of in town driving the past couple of days and so far the temp gauge hasn't made it past R, where as previously I was almost always M-A. I am planning on covering the gap on the top with something like what is covering the left and right front sides of the bay to front transition just for cosmetic reasons.

glad you got it to work for you. It can be tricky doing it from scratch.
I just saw this thread so im a bit late responding. Funny i just installed a fan kit saturday. I purchased it from my local parts store. It was real simple and complete with great instructions.
In case anyone else is reading this thread and wants to install a efan here are parts and part numbers that will work with ford F150's. Hope this helps anyone wanting to add a efan. Fan cost $63.00, wire kit $ 12.00.

i suggest mounting the top fan mount to the radiator body. This method of install will take a majority of the fan weight off the fin mounts passing through the radiator. Temperature probe location 3-4" below the radiator inlet, can be seen in the image below

It's a great project, but still cheaper, quieter and more efficient to run factory style fans than to run aftermarket fans. Just my two cents. Glad to see more people taking this simple mod on though.
So not only do you have the probe going through the fins but your fan is also being mounted through the fins? Top mount or not, even on the smoothest of roads, that set up is going to eat your radiator alive. Good luck with that.
my version that i am going to try and put on this weekend will be a mark VIII fan with controller for ac(low speed comes on with ac) and 2 temperature sensors placed in a bung pipe located in the upper radiator hose near the Tstat, low speed turns on at 185 and high speed comes on at 200
