Unhappy drill a bolt out of intake

so ok heres a ? i broke the head of a bolt off for my thermastat in the lower intake. if i just drill it all the way out will a helicoil be good enough to hold the bolt in or not? i have tried vice grips since there is about a 1/2 inch sticking out but no go. i am preping it for an easy out at the moment but i would like another possiblity in case that dont work.

Don't drill all the way thru. It might go into a water jacket and be a pain to keep from leaking.

That would be called an EASY-OUT.

Only thing that REALLY REALLY REALLY sucks about easy-outs is when they break. Thats why I dont use them.

I suggest alot of lube first. You can drill a hole in the center to relieve pressure of the metals and even go bigger as needed, if this continues not to work, drill up until the pieces can be pulled out. Heli-coil might not need to be used.

I just bought a kit from Sears, Grip-Tite Supersockets from Popular Mechanics. It uses "advanced camming technology." They claim that the harder you turn the socket, the harder the cams grip the bolt/nut. They say it works great on rounded-off nuts and bolts too. I also have a "gator grip" socket that has worked well in the past.

Good luck with the extraction!
