Well, sort of. The other ways described may work, IF the old gasket comes off easily, and in one piece. Things get complicated if you have to scrape off the old gasket; if you have to scrape, you've got to be very careful not to get any of the old gasket material into the oil pan.

If I were doing it, I'd start out trying to do it the easy way, but I'd be prepared to do it the way that Welder7018 described...just in case something doesn't work out quite as planned.

if you have a jack and 2 jack stands a 3/8th drive 4 inch extension and a socket set you can do it real simple in your drive way, most shops will do it by the books which entails removing the engine it seems, im sure someone has The Book laying around to check for you. good luck!

My 1992 I tried that didn't work couldn't get the new felpro gasket around the sump tube. It was a 1 piece I don't like 4 piece gaskets don't trust the joints. And I didn't use rtv because I couldn't get a layer thick enough to get the bolts screwed in. Put it up and the pan with all the bolts torqed down to the recommended specs but I could wiggle the pan some. So I said I'm doing it the way I was told to do to begin with. I tried with the fan on but I hit the radiator with it. So I removed it.

I've had to do a couple on the 300 cid 6 cyl. It's not much fun.

Just for the sake of making sure it was done right i pulled the pan out completely and gave it a good cleaning. Scraped every trace of gasket off the mating surfaces and then Indian Head gasket shellac on both sides of the new gasket.

Seeing as the pan was down anyway i replaced the OEM oil pump w/ an upgrade pump. The don't cost all that much and that way you never have to revisit THAT task again !

I did the same thing.`I first tried the easy way out and then decided to do it right. The motor mounts were shot and so was the rear main seal so I just replaced it all while I had the trans out for a new clutch. She doesn't leak a drop and the HV oil pump is a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion. Mine is 2 wd so it was pretty painless. I did the Sandford & Son in the driveway up on 4 ramps method - gave me plenty of room to play with and it wasn't too bad with a few cold ones! I've never had any luck with the rtv bandaid...not really worth it imho.

Did mine the same way worked like a champ...but you do have to spend some time cleaning the old gasket. I like idea of going around the outside of the pan...
